At Last: Farewell Etta James.
Legendary singer Etta James died last night at the age of 73 of Leukemia.
Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins in LA) started singing gospel in churches and on radio stations at the tender age of five. her solo career was launched in the mid 1950’s with hits like Good Rockin Daddy. (apologies for the scuzzy You Tube ads)
In the 1960’s she signed with Arco and this was a relationship that would prove long and very fruitful for both. At was at this time she produced her most iconic songs such as ‘Trust in Me’ (a personal favorite) and the very very famous ‘At last’.
During the 1960s, James battled heroin addiction, but she stayed productive, recording the classic 1968 LP Tell Mama with the great Muscle Shoals house band. She recorded for Chess until the mid-70s, and continued releasing albums and touring through the mid-2000s.

She will be greatly missed.
